Pantropical, turkis, and Volume Village join forces for a unique SWANA night. DJ’s Nah Care, Leila Moon and Phil Battiekh will bring the newest experimental club sounds from the Arab World, in addition to classic Raï, Bass, and Dabke. Joining us from Cairo, singer/producer Wezza Montaser will present the latest in Mahraganat; the music genre which is the common denominator among tonight’s artists.
MC, singer and producer Wezza Montaser is one of Cairo’s most important artists of the Egyptian
Mahraganat and Trap scene. With heavy bass, catchy hooks and over 35 million youtube streams to his
name, Wezza Montaser’s sound resonates with the youth of the entire Arab world. Next to being an artist in his own right, Wezza produces for – and collaborates with – artists such as Wegz, Afroto and Mahmoud El Leithy. Mahraganat ( Egyptian Arabic: مهرجانات ) , which literally means ”festivals”, is a mix of Egyptian Shaabi, electronic dance music, rap and trap. Expect percussion-heavy rhythms, massive bass and a full load of autotune.
Phil Battiekh (Basel) has been a Mahraganat DJ and producer for over a decade. In addition to his most
popular Mahraganat mixes on Soundcloud (over 450K streams worldwide), he released the acclaimed “Cairo Concepts” compilation. Featuring DJ Plead, DJ Haram, Alaa Fifty, Nustaliga and others, “Cairo Concepts” contextualises the impact and developments of the Mahraganat scene and examines the way certain artists have appropriated Mahraganat for club scenarios. Aside from his own set, Phil will also have a role as Wezza’s tour DJ.
Based in Basel and born to an Algerian mother and a Moroccan father, DJ/producer Leila Moon grew up
watching Anime and Bollywood, listening to Raï, Arab pop, French chansons, American folk and jazz. Her
eclectic DJ sets are a culmination of these influences and intercultural experiences, a form of energetic
musical storytelling. She shares tracks from all around the world, focusing on Raï, Gnawa and Mahraganat, but also mixing Afrobeat, R’n’B, electronica and house.
